May 10 Webinar: Crisis in America: Fake Pills and Fentanyl

Video Recording

A video recording of this webinar is available for you to watch.

Join us for a free webinar sponsored by the University of Maryland Department of Psychiatry FPI EAP Programs. The webinar includes 1 CEU for Social Workers and Counselors.

Tuesday May 10, 2022
2am–3pm

2021 US Overdose Deaths

  • over 100,000 deaths
  • 60% attributed to Fentanyl

Start of the Opioid Epidemic

In 2000 pharmaceutical companies began heavily marketing new opioid formulations as safe, and the FDA expanded indications from “acute only” to “safe for acute and chronic pain.” Over the next 10 years, prescriptions, opioid deaths and people entering treatment quadrupled.

This webinar will provide tools to:

  • Identify the three phases of the current opioid epidemic
  • Become aware of forms of fentanyl—fake pills; fentanyl powder; additives to cocaine, meth, ecstasy (MDMA) and heroin and their consequences
  • Learn about emerging drug trends—Adderall laced with meth and synthetic nicotine vaping
  • Institute effective countermeasures to prevent opioid morbidity and mortality

Fentanyl is now routinely found as an unexpected contaminant, increasingly present in “fake” pain and sedative pills and can be lethal at very low dosages. Overdose deaths in ages 10–19 are rising faster than in any other age group. Even though most drug use rates among adolescents have been trending downward over the past 10 years, emotional distress rates and suicides have been rising, making this a most vulnerable population.

Join us to become educated about current drug trends and how to provide effective self-care and stress control strategies to protect adults and the vulnerable 10–19-year-old population.

Appreciating Unconscious Influences to Foster Better Personal and Clinical Dialogue

This webinar will provide tools to:

  • Identify conscious and unconscious responses in professional, client and family interaction
  • Become aware of potential triggering topics and understand power source of subject
  • Create strategies to effectively guide difficult conversation by depersonalizing responses and reframing content

Healthcare and Social work require navigating challenging conversational topics. Using self-awareness and compassion to understand what makes topics or conversations difficult, one is able to improve effective communication and dialogue even on particularly challenging subjects.

That which is difficult may also be what is essential in fostering good mental and physical health. Unfortunately, our emotions or history can get in the way of successfully and objectively addressing challenging topics, both from the perspective of the treating professional as well as the personal perspective of a consumer or colleague. This webinar is designed to help participants consider factors in their own lives that may hinder objectivity or to identify them in the people with whom we communicate every day in order to successfully navigate or reframe any discussion.

Managing Compassion Fatigue through Self-Care Strategies during COVID-19

Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at 3:00 pm

Professionals in the healthcare and education fields are at a greater risk for developing burnout and Compassion Fatigue due to excessive practice of compassion-focused skills. Compassion Fatigue can strike the most caring and dedicated nurses, social workers, physicians and personal support workers alike.

It has been shown that, when we are suffering from this, we work more rather than less. What suffers is our health, our relationship with others, our personal lives and eventually our patients.

The best strategy to address Compassion Fatigue is to develop excellent self-care strategies, as well as an early warning system that lets you know that you are moving into the caution zone of Compassion Fatigue.
